Grayson County 32, Tazewell 20
INDEPENDENCE — Jarred McMillian rushed for 224 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the Blue Devils last Thursday night.
Quarterback Ty Whittaker was 23-of-37 for 314 yards with three touchdowns for the Bulldogs (1-1), who finished with 357 yards of total offense.
Chase McDonald had five catches for 111 yards and Ellis Day seven catches for 50 yards. McDonald, Day and Caden Williamson caught scoring passes for Tazewell.
THS opened the scoring in the opening quarter on a 34-yard pass from Whittaker to McDonald.
Day caught a 9-yard TD pass at the 10:50 mark of the second quarter for a 13-7 lead, but Grayson County responded with a pair of scores to go up 20-13 at halftime.
The Blue Devils (1-2) added two more TDs in the second half and led 32-13 before Tazewell got answered with Williamson’s 20-yard reception and Robbie Galloway’s PAT kick.
The Blue Devils had 390 yards of total offense.
Southern Gap 63, Giles 21
GILES — Freshman Gunner Baker scored four touchdowns and the Eagles soared to their second win of the season last Friday night in Pearisburg.
Southern Gap (2-2) jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and didn’t take its foot off the gas in the third quarter, piling on four more touchdowns.
Baker gained 105 yards on eight carries. He opened the scoring on a four-yard run (first quarter), caught a 15-yard scoring pass (second quarter), had a 21-yard TD run (third quarter), and a 60-yard kickoff return for a touchdown (third quarter).
Quarterback Brayden White completed six of his seven passes for 129 yards with second quarter touchdown tosses to Baker and Ayden Whited (56 yards).
Carson Blankenship scored on a 34-yard run in the second quarter, Aidan Baker on a 12-yard run in the third quarter, and Caden Justice on a 20-yard run in the third quarter.
Reid Stiltner capped the Southern Gap TD parade with a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter. Blankenship ran eight times for 106 yards, and Justice had 87 yards on seven carries. Whited had three receptions for 97 yards and the TD. The Spartans fell to 0-3. Southern Gap is averaging 29 points a game, while allowing 27.5.
Graham 14, Union 12
BIG STONE GAP — Trailing 12-7 with 9:06 left in the game, Graham quarterback Garrett Palmer engineered a nine-play, 57-yard drive that ended with a touchdown and lifted the G-Men last Friday night at Bullitt Park.
The winning touchdown came on a four-yard pass from Palmer to Jeremiah Quick with 2:37 to play.
A sophomore, Palmer was held out of practice all week after spraining the MCL in his knee on the first play in the previous game against Lynchburg Heritage. He wore a knee brace against Union and picked up 38 yards on 13 carries.
The Bears (2-1) generated over 360 yards on Friday, only to self-destruct by losing four of six fumbles. Three of those fumbles came inside the Graham 20-yard line.
Senior linebacker Jysir Williamson (6-1, 250) was the defensive leader.
Union took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on senior quarterback Abe Hall’s three-yard run that capped an 84-yard, 12-play drive. The PAT kick failed.
Then, two plays after recovering a fumble at Union 13-yard line late in the opening quarter, the G-Men (2-1) went up 7-6 on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Palmer to senior Cambel Fix.
The Bears grabbed the 12-7 advantage early in the fourth quarter when Hall connected with Kaiden Keith for a 43-yard score.
That set the stage for Garrett’s winning drive.
Lee High 33, Richlands 0
RICHLANDS — Aiden Bates rushed for 192 yards with two touchdowns as the Generals marched through Ernie Hicks Stadium last Thursday night.
Lee High (2-1) limited the Blue Tornado (0-3) to 86 yards of total offense.
Richlands had 21 rushes for 11 yards, although TJ Lawson had 31 yards rushing on 11 carries before negative team yardage was factored into the team total. QB Jamie Capshaw was 7-for-19 for 75 yards and one interception.
The Generals led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, 20-0 at the half and 33-0 after three periods.
Clay Robbins had 97 passing yards for Lee High and two TD passes.
