Tazewell County Treasurer David Larimer gave supervisors the annual settlement showing the financial condition of the county as of June 30, 2026, along with the delinquent tax book.
Larimer said the total committed funds the county had was $39,105,338.70 with uncommitted funds at $5,282,250.98, for a total of $44,387,589.68.
He told supervisors when taxes are paid, if a person owes back taxes, those — by Virginia Code — must be paid first. He said there are less than 1% of 2021 real estate or 2021 personal property taxes owed to the county out of $28 million. In 2022 there is a total of 1.09% delinquent of $29.5 million.
The percentage increased to 1.51% delinquent in 2023 from total taxes of $29.34 million. In 2024 the total taxes still owed are 2.31% of $33.78 million.
He explained that the reason the 2025 percentage is 5.26% of $33.46 million is due to money owed on back taxes goes to the oldest amount first.
He said many people still do not realize that his office is happy to set up a monthly payment plan for those who can’t afford to pay a large lump sum at one time.
“We have a lot of people who are on a fixed income and are happy to go on the monthly payment plan so that their taxes are paid,” Larimer said. “We have widows, widowers, people just trying to make ends meet, and we are happy to set up a payment plan for them.”
